MoonLight Run

June 20th 2008 | Posted by Brian

LBJ, I had to come to work very early one day this week and remember seeing a bright full moon, which made me think about MoonLight buggy run. I also remember it was cold, almost needed a jacket.

Having said that, next full moon period might be good enough to do mid-night buggy ride. So, I am checking next full moon schedule.

July 18th, 4 am, which gives us July 19th Saturday morning 3 am ~ morning buggy ride opportunity. Let me check tide schedule.

July 19th 3 am low tide!!! I think we are meant to buggy that day.

I say we keep an eye on the wind to determine meeting location, meet there at 3 am Saturday morning (July 19th, 2008) and buggy until whenever it’s crowded.

How does it sound? Who’s with me?

Edit: Things to bring

Warm clothes, Sleeping bag, camping chair, Head lamp, Bicycle tailight, two way radio, glow sticks

Time: Friday night/Saturday morning Midnight ~ until you pass out

Location: LBJ Place, JFK Beach Drive & E 2nd Avenue, North Wildwood, NJ

It cant get better than that>>>>>> I will check my work schedule tonight and see what I am working…. Even if I am scheduled to work I will see if I can take off. Other than the work thing,, I am diff IN>

commenter

This sounds like a good plan!!!.. What are winds doing that day (night) of course it is kinda early to predict winds.. The few times I was frisbeeing with Don at night on the beach with full moon, is because there was no wind ;)
I’ll have family over for July (yes the entire month) so I really have to play it by ear…

commenter

I hate to be the Party Pooper but it is very very rare to have wind in the middle of the night in the summer at Wildwood. All we can do is hope!
I’ll hang out and throw Frisbee and enjoy the beach, No Problem!
FYI, The low tide is allways when the moon is at it’s highest or lowest.
Pleasant Breezes,
Don

commenter

Don, you might be right about summer wind. Well, I am just excited to go out to the beach in the middle of the night under full moon. How often you do that in your life? :)

Who know? LBJ is lucky enough to bring some nice SE wind??? No pressure, Joe :)

We will keep an eye on the wind, meanwhile.

commenter

It’s a hike for iffy wind… But Brian’s right. How often do ya get to spend a night on a moonlit beach?
Barring rain, I am in.

After all, I have EZ-Pass now :)

commenter

Ah~ that’s the NJBuggyClub sprit!!!

commenter

Hey LBJ, Could you check with the Beach Patrol to make sure we are alowed on the beach after 11:00 PM?
Note: if low tide is 3:00 AM we can be buggying with the reght wind before midnight!
Pleasant Breezes, Don

commenter

I’m going to try to make it, should be fun regardless!

commenter

Hey LBJ,
I’m getting worried about the use of the beach late night.
What’s the word?
Pleasant Breezes, Don

commenter

This concerns me:

http://www.buywildwood.com/Wildwood%20Beach%20Information.htm

It says:
“Beach access is restricted during the season from 10 pm to 6 am – May through September.”

commenter

I’ve got OK from LBJ so I am definitely in!

For those of you coming, I would like to get suggestions for late night snack. Cold pizza (should still be ok to eat. easy to carry and eat) or some subway sandwiches? You name it, and it’s on me! (no lobsters, guys)

commenter

I just could never get the deal with cold pizza…….. pizza is supposed to be consumed hot…….. Well anyway, subway sandwiches sound good to me. I bring some stuff also. I can get a cooler with ice and load it with water and iced tea. And as far as the beach access like I said if we are in north wildwood we will diff not have a problem and we would not have a problem in the other areas, Wildwood, Wildwood crest either. I know all the guys working so I will just shue them away. Even if I was connected to the police I dont think they would bother anyone down there doing what we do. But dont worry about it. Lets do it>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

commenter

Oh yeah,,, I might hit the beach tomorrow morning around 7:30am,,, low tide just at that time and 12 to 14 mph SW wind,,, North Wildwood would be good… I will let you know how it goes.

commenter

ok, ok, no cold pizza. I realized that WAWA opens for 24 hours. I will do WAWA run and get some warm food, whatever you guys want (again, no lobsters). So, we got food and beverage covered. Awesome! I will think about what to bring and post it here later.

So excited!!!

commenter

Awesome. Thanks for the good news, LBJ!
I’m psyched. Should be fun, wind or not.

Plus we’ll get to see if anyone’s a werewolf :)

commenter

I’ve added things needed for night ride in my first post. Anything else?

commenter

Hey Guys,
What’s with the “Buffett on the Beach”, just get there early and pig out on the Board Walk.
Like Mack’s Pizza (hot), Snow White’s Roast Beef, Kohr’s ice cream, just to name a fue.
That way if we have wind you can buggy and not dick around feeding your face.
I’m I too serious?
Pleasant Breezes, Don

commenter

Small chance I’ll be able to make it, as I mentioned before I have my family visiting, unless I can drag my bro in law with me, I am not sure if I can make it happen, will keep you guys posted.

we staid a few times overnight with Don (after summer) but he is right, Frisbee throwing was fun, boomerang was iffy (hard to catch in the dark), but no wind.. we had a good night any way, @Don, if you still have you “UFO” frisbee make sure to bring it along.

commenter

Sorry to report that I have to back out fellas.
Have to attend a christening on Saturday, so can’t do both :(

Will pray for good wind for you guys.

commenter

Ok Guys,
Reality is setting in.
Weather Underground is predicting for Saturday night/Sunday morning at 2:00 AM:
Winds – 5 mph WSW
Thunder Storms – 20% chance
Cloud cover – 55%
Unless conditions improve greatly I will not be at “The Full Moon Buggy Blast”.
It cost me $75.00 for gas, 7 hrs of driving, and I have a Granddaughter B-Day Party to attend Sunday afternoon so I can not stay past 9:00 AM.
Hope all that attend have a great time!

Pleasant Breezes, Don

commenter

Understood.

I still plan on attending as long as LBJ’s there. Will see what happens.

By the way, I am talking about Friday night/Saturday morning ride, which forecast is better than Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Friday night/Sunday morning Forecast according to NOAA
Wind SW 14 ~ 9mph
Cloud cover 25%
No rain

commenter

Well no it looks like I will be able to make it as we will hit Cape May on Saturday, so I figured I bring my brother in law to intro him to buggy, in the morning hours we drive south to Cape may and we will meet the rest of our family on the beach, we can sleep all day on the beach, and drive back home Saturday night..

I’ll keep watching the posts, and hope to be there Friday night

What time will you guys show up??

commenter

Alright! that sounds good, Jesse. I will bring some more Subway sandwiches for you and your brother-in-law.

I will be there Friday night midnight.

Time: Friday night/Saturday morning Midnight
Location: LBJ Place

commenter

Ok now that sounds better,,,, I will be there, 2nd street in North Wildwood, beach at midnight also. Hey Brian, are you going to bring your extra buggy in case we locate any hitch hikers that want to ride behind?

commenter

hey Barnes,, whats your deal? you should be coming here also.

commenter

Ye, I can bring an extra buggy and tow kit if you want. Thinking about taking your kids out, LBJ?

Barnes, I can bring my landboard as well for you to ride. Of course, you can ride my buggy any time.

commenter

I’ll have my buggy and my blokart, my brother in law never buggied before, but I am sure he’ll do great in the blokart, if somebody can give him a ride in the tow buggy he’ll have a blast.

Does any body have freesbies in case the wind is not much??, I’ll bring a stunt kite too, and may be a nasa wing too…., I just have to figure how I can fit every thing in my car..

commenter

I will bring my stunt kite also,, and I think I have a frizbee.

commenter

Ok, I will bring two buggies.

commenter

I just checked forecast at NOAA. Actually looks good! We are expecting more wind than day time!!!

commenter

Friday Night isn’t looking too bad!
Don

commenter

Hey Luke,
It’s nice to hear how much the guys are going to miss us.
Don

commenter

Heheheh.
It stings a little… But not as much as much as the sting I’d get if I missed this christening!

…or as much as being told last week by park rangers that my local static-flying spot is a no-kite-zone…due to county ordinance.
(For the record, they were sympathetic, and said they were sorry to have to boot me, since I never bother anyone.)

Come October I’m just going to have to make up for all this “de-bugging” time by getting to WW as much as possible.

commenter

Luke,
That sucks about your park. Sad to say but I’ve experienced that in parks all over the country. We can talk about that in Oct. when we are having a blast in WW.
Looks like I will be going Friday night. Could be some wind, the weather is nice, and the B-day party I should attend is Sunday at 2:00.
I think I can get home in time.
Pleasant Breezes, Don

commenter

Don,
Yeah…I figured it would happen one day…
Ah well. It’ll make WW even more fun, that’s all.

Glad to hear you’re going to make it tomorrow. I’ll keep praying for awesome wind for you guys.

You all have a great time, and be safe!

I just checked the stats for tonight,,, it is looking good, wind not bad and direction is good for North Wildwood. This will be fun,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

commenter

Hey Guys,
How was the Moon Light Run?
Don

commenter

Hey Don,

sorry you couldnt be there. It was pretty good. The wind was there pretty much all night. It was me, Brian, Jesse and his brother-in-law Hans. Everything was just about perfect, the wind direction could have been better but it still was a really good time. We started out about midnight and jesse and hans left about 4am brian and I by the time we got done packing up left about 5:30am. We had some good runs, mostly back and forth in that area of 2nd street,, no real long ones. We have to plan a day time run,, I am thinking a late afternoon run around 6pm or so when the tide is right. that way we would have about 3hrs or so before it gets dark. Of course we had no problems with the law,,,,they even hung out with us for a while and had some iced tea. On a scale from 1 to 10 as far as success I would have to rate it a strong 8. Would be better if we had more people there so we have to work on that. One problem was the humidity,, the kites were getting weighed down after awhile but that was toward the end of the night. Let me know when your coming down.

commenter

oh, LBJ, you beat me to it. Yup! great time. It was better than I anticipated. I still can’t believe we got that much wind that night all night.

I started with my 8M depower kite then soon I realized it’s hard to keep those bridle lines straight in dark, and switched to 5M Yakuza. After a while, wind started to pick up so I switched to a smaller size, 3.5M. It was good enough for me to move around. It was dark so I wasn’t going for speed record anyway.

At one point, I was towing Jesse’s brother-in-law, Hans. It took forever to get to my good spot (had to tack many many times) but once we got there, we had fun. I am sure he was covered with sea water and sand like I was but he didn’t seem to mind.

As Joe mentioned, humidity was kite killer. If I remember correctly, it was over 90% that night. I am not sure it’s typical for summer night but that’s something we need to keep an eye on for next moon-light buggy event.

After I got home, I took about 2 hour nap and started to unpack stuff and it ended at about 2 pm. Went to swimming pool after that and came back to my place at about 4 pm. I told Jen “kind of tired. I am going to take another nap”. Guess when I woke up. Next morning 8 am!!! Jen said “you are an animal!!!” :)

commenter

Joe, Brian,
Sounds like you guys had a good moon light experance.
That makes me feel good. I will make a serious effort to get to the next one.
A 6:00 PM happening would be great but it’s back to too many people on the beach.

I am kinda late on the reply, but still want to thank LBL and Brian for the awesome night. Don, eating on the beach isn’t that bad when you do it LBL/Brian style with table, lamps and glow sticks…..

My brother in law had a great time too!!!

I won’t be at the next one (if Aug 15) as I will be in Boston for work..
