Don – Ivanpah – Soaring

April 3rd 2009 | Posted by Don

Today’s Bonus Activity was a nice morning Glider ride before the winds hit 30 mph.
I traded the pilot a BloKart session for the ride.
What a deal!

hey don
that must of been so cool. i remember a guy there on roach setting up a light fixed wing in 2001. i buggyed up to him and helped him set up. he asked if i wanted to go up. i jumped at the chance. it was so cool going up and crusing at 3000ft following I-15. at one point he shut off the engine and we crusied in power off to about 1000ft and he powered up and we landed. he stayed on roach for a few days and i made it a point to help him break down his craft. i asked him if he wanted to try my buggy. but he didn`t want to. thats one cool toy. how did he(you) get up? did he use that van in the backround as a tow vehicle?

We used a tow plane (Crop Duster)and flew out of Jen airport.
The rest of the story:
My friend Dave who came out for NABX is a glider pilot which conected me with this whole deal.
Dave went on a 2 hr flight after me to play with the desert thermals and waves which are much larger than what we get in the East.
Yesterday the winds came up to about 30 in the afternoon. I hung out on the Playa all day enjoying friends.
At sunset the wind dropped off a bit. Enough that as I was setting up my 2 meter Beamer I was thinking about a 3.
Not! Just as I strated to buggy the wind came back. I did about 10 minutes of extreme speed and than it became too much to handle, 40 plus.
It was a hard just to get my kite stowed way.
It’s 12:00 now and the wind is 30 plus (dust out), that’s why I’m in Bill’s playing with the laptop.
Hope you guys have some good conditions at WW this weekend.
Pleasant Breezes,
Don
