I recently got permission to fly at a SOD farm right outside the Beltway in Maryland.
If you arent too far from DC, do a search on maps.google.com for the following address: 920 john brown road, centreville, md 21617.
It is probably one of the largest places I have ever seen for riding, short of the beach.
There is a waiver required before flying there, and we need to be mindful of the location of freshly seeded grass, but otherwise it could be a pretty amazing place to fly. Going to do the first real session there this weekend. If you are interested, please drop me an e-mail at nikey_22@hotmail.com. I have the waivers and the contact information.
Thanks.

Hey ragden, I scoped out the sod farm on google maps and it looks pretty good.
Checked the wind for Saturday, NW 13.
For me it is 50 miles closer than Wildwood and an hour + less driving time.
I also checked on Wildwood conditions:
low tide – 12:35, Winds WNW 16.
If I can get away Saturday I think I have to drive the extra hour and save the Sod Farm for bad tide days.
What’s the full info on the air strip near Phile that I heard people talk about months ago.
Ragden-I’m interested in joining you. Trouble is the wife leaves with the car tomorrow. For ten weeks. Ack.
Don-the airstrip is in Warminster. Winds are a little gusty as it is inland, but with the right conditions it can be great. There are a few grassy areas as well as the blacktop strip. Magic Mark Bruley has been flying there for a long time. It is an old air base turned community park.
Dillon – Bummer dude. I’d come up and get you, but its a little out of my way… Sorry man. If you find a way to get there, let me know and I’ll e-mail you the waiver and where to send it.
Thanks for checking extra land out Ragden….
This week end for the farm is a no for me as WW is always my best ride
Not sure how the freshly seeded grass will behave when we ride on it, but usually not too well
WW looks like it could be good this week end, Don keep me posted, if you go and I go we can maybe pick Joe on the way (or is that too much for the new Van
) if not we’ll get that dude on the beach somehow!!
There is a chance I’ll go snowboarding, but we (my wife and me)were talking about doing that next week other wise.
Most of the field we are looking at has been seeded for quite some time, and looks plenty firm. I’ll let you know after we get a chance to ride it on Saturday. There is an area that was just recently seeded, and we have been asked to steer clear of that.
I fully expected that this would be a little too far for some people. Especially those that live close to the beach. But when the tides are wrong, Central Sod might just be the place to be.
I’d love to hit WildWood this weekend, but I really cannot afford the trip right now. I need to save some money for our week long snowboarding trip to Canada at the end of February…
Hmmmm… Sod or Sand that is the question. As of right this very moment it will be neither unless my son will get better. He has the bug that’s been floating around. We will see.
Dillon, Would be happy to pick you up for a Wildwood buggy sesson.
I’m a go for Saturday at Wildwood if the predicted wind does not deminish.
Right now it looks like NW 16.
Todd, Hope your boy is feeling better.
His new toy arrives today!
I’m sure the sight of a brand new kite-toy will make him feel good enough to fly!
many years ago i buggied on a sod farm in upstate new york. the place i went to had just ripped up all the sod for the year. so it was just like a mud pit. i only did it for one day and i was so muddy. but it was fun.
Well, they still have LOTS of grass to ride on. heh. Mud-pit. Sounds very entertaining.
I think I am allergic to work
Kiting makes me feel alive and energetic.
Thanks Don,
Buggy arrived today just waiting for the rest of the goodies coming from you to surprise him. I envision wide eye’s, jaw dropped and a BIG hug! He’s a good boy.
Just hope he feels better enough to buggy, 100.2* isn’t looking good
Todd, you bought another buggy? Now three total? Man, you are crushing my record. Now I have to buy another one to keep the title???
Brian,
Are you coming down this weekend? Whats the deal,,,,,,who else is making the trip? You know I have to make plans, its not like I can just pack up my truck and be there within 15 minutes,,,,,oh wait,,,,,yes I can……
I won’t be able to make it this weekend. I was going to start a new post with some pictures but last Sunday my apartment was flooded due to sprinkler leak and we had to move to a new apartment. We moved most of our stuff to a new place but it’s still a mess.
I took some pictures of flooded apartment and I will post them here later.
So, no kiting for me this weekend
Wow Brian, sorry to hear about the water leak. That sucks man. I hope you didnt lose too much stuff due to that. Were any of your kites, or kiting stuff damaged?
I have to say I was luck(?) because Saturday night, I had done all kite maintenance and packed up everything. I was out when it happened but Jen’s quick action pretty much saved everything including kites, computers and all Cisco (you know what I mean, ragden) routers and VoIP gear. She basically saved my life.
Hey Brian, Todd, sorry to hear about flooding and the son sick!1, I hope it all works out for you guys!!!
I am planning for WW this Saturday, Ragden, if you get a chance to take pics, please do and post!!!
Don, I sent you an email….
I’ll have my camera with me, but not sure the wife wants to go yet. If I can convince her, we will have TONS of pictures to show, maybe even some videos. If I have it by myself, well… I’ll get SOME, but I cannot promise number and quality.
Brian- Yeah man, if that Cisco equipment had gotten wet… that would have been truely tragic. That stuff is NOT cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Would the service contracts have covered them if they had gotten damaged? Or is this stuff you purchased on ebay for playing with?
I don’t think it would have been covered. All my personal stuff I bought on ebay. Cisco used to be my hobby before kiting…
wow!!, Cisco routers or kite buggy. what a change
Brian, bummer about the flood. I hope most of your stuff dried out OK.
Ragden, I’ll bring my camera too so we’ll have pics and vid.
The rest of the crew, I’m near DC and have been to WW a few times, awesome place!!! Met some of you the last Feb 2008 when I was there for landboarding. Been a long time. Look forward to meeting up again soon.
Cheers,
Lon
Hey, Lon. Good to hear that you guys are finally hooking up. Have fun and post some pictures.
hey brian
sorry to hear about your flood. same thing happened to me a few years back. i lost a few things in the flood but luckly my kites are stored off the floor.
Hello all,
We WILL be making the sod farm tomorrow YEAH! His fever broke yesterday evening, was hungry and feeling much better. So its on!
Brian sorry to hear about the flood, bummer. Do you need any help on Sunday? Corey and I could stay over on the Eastern Shore then head your way if you need us.
Thank you all for the well wishes for my son, that was nice of you all.
Oh Brian, I just picked Corey up the buggy. This will be his first so that only means we have two……. for now. I plan on making a passenger trailer in the future.
Just wanted to say that it seemed like everyone who went to the SOD farm today had a blast. Wind was a little bit gusty, but boy was it fun. I have a couple pictures of the field, and even one of Lon on his landboard.
The real kicker will be all the great videos that Todd got. I hear he even got a crazy clip of some psycho getting lofted up pretty good…
Cant wait to see it.
Here’re some pics from the sod farm.

A lot of panned out pictures so you can see how big it is.
Gusty day but a lot of fun.
and the video.

Sorry for the short clips and no sound. The SD card must be corrupted and this all that I could recover.
Looks good, sorry I missed it.
That was fun, goose poo and all! This was Corey’s first real time he got moving in a buggy and now he’s hooked.
I think its time for a new video camera, just not crisp enough but was still able to get some good video.
Enjoy!

Thanks for doing the leg work Michael. I think it could only get better and better at the Sod Farm.
You guys are my heroes. It’s been a tough week and Sat/Sun, I was stuck at home, just dreaming about kiting and after watching pictures and videos of you guys riding, all the stress’s gone!
Thanks for riding “for” me!
ragden, tell the world that you did it on purpose
Since you were ok, it was an awesome trick
Very nice videos!
that was what I would call some serious OBX. Funny thing about that, I only vaguely recall the whole thing. The kite went up, I looked down to watch the ground going away.. I remember thinking… Crap, this cant be good.
Then i came down. Tried to keep my feet under me, but I ended up on my back. Was a pretty serious impact. I sat up to release the kite, and realize that my 5th line wasnt attached. Jumped up, chased down the kite, reattached 5th line, and laid back down. Really didnt feel like moving right about then. Little sore, little achy, but otherwise doing just fine.
Buggying for another 2 hrs after that. Obviously wasnt that bad.
Gusty wind + big kite, not always the greatest combination. Had a Blast though. And yeah, it was a complete accident. I aint gonna deny the truth. That totally took me by surprise. Heh.
Congrats Ragden!!! you won the distance jump for the day. You were at least 50-60 ft from the buggy when I tacked back to see if you’re OK.
Great vid Todd. I like the shot of Will (1:49) with all the birds in the background. Don’t run under them like I did or you’ll get bombed with poop.
Dude, I’m Impressed! That was quite an OBX for sure. I tried to hook you up with a 2 meter, but NO!
The sod farm looks great for Power Kiting, thanks for finding it.
chilepin, videos are good, glad to see Cory was feeling good enough the have some buggy fun. Also happy to see all his kite goodies arrived in time.
Think I will have to join you guys for the next Sod Farm Fest.
Thanks for the compliments!
Chilepin, That’s Corey and I favorite part as well. I was lucky to get it. What kind of camera are you running? I enjoyed watching the video of Sandy Point and thought of trying that out soon.
Don! Thanks for the goodies, as you can see he enjoyed them tremendously.
Todd, I use a stickcam.
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/mini-spy-camera-stick.html
You can pick it up on eBay for around $50. It’s so small and light you can stick it anywhere or tape it to your kite as a kitecam.
Sandy point is great for anything from E->S, but SE directly onshore is the best. There’s a entrance fee ($5/person during season and $3/car off season). It’s available all year long if there’s not a crowd on the beach, although we have been kicked off a few times by the park superintendent. He’s usually the guy driving around with a golf cart but not around much during off season.
